How easy is it to understand everything that the Accountant tells you?Do you find it easy to understand everything that your Accountant tells you?

In a survey, the majority of business owners admitted to having problems in understanding what their accountant is telling them.

To be precise, the problem was with getting some concrete "what to do" from the information the accountant gives.

A business owner is usually all too willing to accept fault when he finds it hard to understand what his accountant is telling him.

This is noble but not necessarily wise.

For what good is information that cannot be understood?

What are you paying for if not information on the finances of your business?

Don't accept anything but understandable information about monthly accounts and finances! When it comes to GETTING the vital, time-sensitive information you need to run your business, excuses just won't do.

Either it is delivered to you or it isn't.

There are no half measures. If you don't have the correct, timely information you NEED in order to make the day-to-day decisions in your work, your work will suffer.

Any decision is hard enough as it is. Without the correct data on which to base the decision it becomes impossible.

You either have to postpone the decision or, if that's not an option, make it without the certainty of it being a correct decision.

The less accurate the information, the likelier it is to make a wrong decision.

The same applies when it comes to how real-time the data is. Decisions made on last year's figures cannot be as accurate as those made with last MONTH'S information.

Additionally, the degree to which the financial developments are ANALYSED will also affect the likely correctness of the decision.

There's a scale of decision-making that defines both its accuracy (how correct the decision will be) and the ease or difficulty of MAKING the decision.

With accurate and analysed information delivered timely decisions are much easier - and much more correct. Reversely, the more general and out-dated the information, the more the decision-making is based on pure assumptions.

You might be very good at guessing - but in the final analysis, why risk it?

If your accountant can and will deliver the information in an UNDERSTANDABLE form, then you will HAVE the data on which to make decisions.

Easier and more correct decisions.

Whose responsibility is it to make financial information understandable to the client?

Financial figures and statements require quite some expertise before they give you the WHOLE picture...The headline puts forward rather a pertinent quesion, don't you think?

All nonsense aside, let's put it in no uncertain terms:

It is the responsibility of the accountant to ensure the client understands the financial information delivered.

It has to be delivered in understandable English, not with lots of accounting terminology. It has to be EXPLAINED politely and in a way that makes SENSE.

How else could you GET the information?

Should YOU have to become an Accounting Professional just so you could COMPREHEND what your monthly accounts signify... or should it be the accountant whose task it is to TELL you?

In the final analysis, isn't it really that RESULTING UNDERSTANDING that IS what you pay for?

INSIDER TIP

When selecting an accountant, it is very important that you check how well he can make himself understood.

Make a note of how much he uses accounting terminology or other financial terms not commonly known. He shouldn't talk as if chatting with a colleague!

Don't accept any nonsense of it being YOUR fault if you cannot understand what he says.

If you DON'T understand what the accountant tells you, if you find your mind wandering when he talks... consider whether it'll get any better once you sign onto his services.

If he cannot make himself understood when SELLING his service, do you really think it's going to improve once you've signed on as his client?
